At Southern Cross Central Lakes Hospital, our commitment to patient care extends beyond the walls of our facility. We believe in taking responsibility for our environment and are proud to introduce our 'Green Team.' This dedicated group of passionate staff members is at the forefront of advocating for environmental consciousness and implementing innovative initiatives to reduce, reuse, and recycle.
We're excited to share some of the fantastic initiatives our 'Green Team' has been working on.
PVC recycling with Baxter Healthcare
We've partnered with Baxter Healthcare from Christchurch to collect PVC bags from our hospital. These bags are then recycled and repurposed into garden hoses, gumboots, and playground matting, giving a new lease of life to materials that would have otherwise gone to waste.
Medslav partnership
In our ongoing commitment to sustainability, we've joined forces with Medslav. Medslav collect filled cartons of compression sleeves and hover mats from our hospital, reprocessing and manufacturing them for reuse in hospitals. This not only helps the environment but also reduces costs compared to purchasing brand new items.
Food composting
To combat food waste, we've introduced a compost bin within the ward staff room. Every second day, our food compost is collected and transported by bike to a local community composter found on ShareWaste NZ. This initiative not only minimises waste but also supports our local community.
Sterile wrap repurposing
The sterile wraps used to package clean instrument trays find a second life in the hands of local organisations. We collect and deliver these wraps to the cat rescue in Queenstown and animal rehab in Alexandra, where they are repurposed for various uses.
